I am a Research Fellow at the LSHTM Centre for the Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases, an Honorary Fellow at in the Laboratory for Foundations of Computer Science and an associate member of the SynthSys Centre for Mammalian Synthetic Biology. Previously I was a postdoc at LFCS and SynthSys. My work falls in two main areas: mathematical and computational techniques for biology and medicine, and telecommunications networks. There is a little overlap, but not much.

I use concepts and techniques such as stochastic graph rewriting from computer science to study biological systems, combining models of different phenomena, often at different temporal or spatial scales. For example, with epidemics, I am interested in how altruism and game-theoretic models of behaviour affect epidemic trajectories. I am also interested in how immune response within individuals affects dynamics at the population level. In the past, I have worked on tissue development with a particular focus on measuring and understanding the mechanisms by which structure emerges in living creatures (histogenesis) with applications in understanding the spreading of cancerous tissue (histopathology) as well as compositional models and compilers for genetic circuits.

Since the mid 1990s, I have been working in telecommunications network, recently in rural, remote, infrastructure-poor and otherwise challenging environments. I am interested in communications infrastructure security which I consider to be an integral part of the network engineering discipline.

I am a musician, and occasionally perform on the Scottish smallpipes and border-pipes.

If you are a student interested in any of these topics looking for a supervisor for UG4, MInf and M.Sc(Res), please contact me.
